Life Eternal

“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” John 17:3 ESV

John declares the essence of life as God defines it. The very term "eternal life" is a human interpretation suited to our fallen condition. Before sin there was only one kind of life. All life was eternal. Every created being was fully connected to the creator and thus fully connected to the source of all life. From the beginning life was not equated with existence as much as it was with relationship. As Jesus knelt among the twelve, hours before facing calvary, he revealed to them the essence of life as it was understood from the beginning. Jesus understood that life was not defined by breathe but by a trusting connection with the source of all breathe.

Jesus desired the twelve to understand that all life short of eternal life was actually death. Lucifer launched his rebellion based on two fundamental ideas. The first was that God was not truly a God of selfless love, in fact his proposed principles of self-governance denied the very existence of truly unselfish love. The second principle was that life could exist apart from God. Throughout the rebellion the second of his two assertions appeared to be manifestly true. Even banishment from heaven and the tree of life did not bring an end to his existence or that of his fallen host. Yet life on loan will come to an end. When the controversy is ended the arch deceiver will have his chance to test his claim to immortality.

Christianity is a relationship which connects us to eternal life now. The fruits of this connection will be fully manifest in the hereafter. When we point people to Jesus we are offering them Life. The communion which animates heaven with life and joy is available now.

Still Seeking His Face,

Pastor Andrew
