Love Suffers Long

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;”

I Corinthians 13:4 NKJV

The path of least resistance never leads to anything worth while. Love is the purpose of life and it is worth fighting for. Successfully waging war against self requires us to endure pain. Love suffers long and when we endure pain for another’s sake we are entering into the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings.

This sounds good but what does it look like in our day to day experience? Most people run from pain. It is easy to believe the lie that happiness is found only when we are free from difficulty. But Jesus for the joy that was set before him found strength to endure the cross. Happiness is found only in love and love requires us to endure pain on behalf of others.

When one person treats us harshly will we absorb the offense and not respond in kind? Will we strive for control so that we can avoid pain, or will we choose love’s path? Selfishness is a vicious cycle that produce an never ending cycle of pain and abuse. Love has the power to break sin’s cycle by refusing to participate. Love responds to abuse with kindness interrupting the chain-reaction of selfishness.

It is the long-suffering nature of God which eventually wins our hearts. When we realize that our Heavenly Father endures all of our abuse and never responds in kind, we begin to yield to his tender appeal.

Still Seeking His Face,

Pastor Andrew
